Family Support
Family-care is an art form.
One of the focuses in my work is not just supporting youth, but their whole family. This is partly due to the reality that families be they parents, Aunts and Uncles, or siblings so often just don't have time to honor their needs. This can inherently change the dynamic of these family relationships.
Yet, while discussing this need there is a complexity to it, a nuance in the practice of it, and a self-awareness that we must utilize. It is not our job to shame families as mentors. It is also instrumental we understand the cultural and mental health beliefs of the family. In doing so we can truly open up the conversation to all family members and cultivate respect amongst all participants.
I highly suggest that we keep the focus on the practice of empathy and active listening. And yes this does include our language during the conversation. This practice can be difficult when tensions flow but as mentors, we are there to be the calm force that helps offset this. I find working to know our own self control and applying mental techniques such as coping skills works great.
Family care goes beyond the realm of rest, it involves the right mindset, an environment of healthy communication, and the willingness to understand our supports and our daily lives better. This conversation goes far beyond what I have mentioned and delves into truths even I am not fully aware off yet, but I hope to learn. And perhaps today there is a truth mentioned here that truly resonates with you.
