Dungeons and Dragons Rules are Too Hard?!
For many, the rules are complex, the need to speak in front of others, and the requirement to make in-game decisions is a lot! However, that is where an empathic focus is key.
One of the greatest joys of my work is getting to help new players learn Dungeons and Dragons within a setting that is kind, patient, and understanding. As these elements help define a very different kind of gameplay setting. They help to assure people of any age that they will be treated with respect and dignity. Furthermore, crafting a culture where people know they will be treated with empathy and compassion can help the rules of the game feel less intimidating.
So often, the worry of having to be an expert or the anxiety of being around people needs to be met with a kind figure who will smile and listen. And when we listen, we can better explain things like the admittedly complex rules of D&D. Don't believe me? Give it a try! Listen to someone at your table with the intent to listen. Have a conversation about why the rules were misunstood without judgment. Try understanding that while someone may not understand it is not their fault. The results may shock you.
Just because we are game masters doesn't mean we can not learn from those playing in the world we create.
